Starting therapy for the first time can feel deeply vulnerable, especially if you’re someone who isn’t used to talking openly about yourself, doesn’t know what to expect from therapy, or feels afraid that opening things up emotionally will become overwhelming.
Therapy doesn’t need to feel stiff, overly clinical, or like you’re being evaluated the entire time.
You don’t need to walk into the first session prepared to immediately disclose your deepest pain or trauma history. Building trust takes time, and part of my job is helping create a relationship where you feel emotionally safe enough to gradually become more honest, open, and understood at your own pace.
A lot of people are surprised by how quickly therapy starts to feel more natural and less intimidating than they expected. You don’t need to know exactly how to “do therapy” in order for the work to be meaningful.
